The Second Spring

Once a woman has entered her ‘second spring’, she should find that she has a more settled mind. There should be less in the way of extreme emotional swings and it should be much simpler to enter into deep internal work such as meditation or advanced alchemical training. If a woman learns to trust herself, then her intuition should increase, along with her sensitivity to the energy around her. She should feel as though she is flowing through life events. Of course, this is dependent upon either going through a healthy menopausal transition or having been through it and come out at the other end. Because of the ‘drying up’ of the Tian Gui, there is less of a strong cycle of energy taking place with the cycles of the moon; this should cause the Shen to stabilise and the emotions to be less prone to fluctuations. The only real energetic shift that takes place within a woman during this phase of her life is an upwards lift through the vertical branch of her Thrusting meridian, a movement of information that should make it easier for her to connect with higher realms of comprehension. This should be the age at which a woman moves into her space of wisdom and has the potential to become a spiritual guide or teacher to others. Sadly, many women miss this opportunity because they do not recognise the inherent power involved in this stage of their lives.

During the ‘second spring’ of a woman’s life she should apply the following principles if she is able:

•A woman should not work intensively during this phase of her life. The Kidney essence is not there to sustain constant mental and physical exertion. If possible, a woman should begin to cut back on her responsibilities and take it easy. Now is a time for a woman to focus upon her own internal cultivation more than anything else.

•A woman in this phase of her life should try to ensure she has some kind of still sitting practice. It does not matter what system – she should find one that suits her. There are many different meditation systems, ranging from observing the breath through to alchemical systems from the Daoist tradition. A woman in her ‘second spring’ will find that her ability to connect with her inner realm is much increased and she will benefit from leading the mind deeper into stillness.

•It is important for a woman to focus upon herself, not just on those around her. It is often the case that many women coming into our classes lead lives based almost entirely around other people. Whether these people are their husbands, their children or whoever, so many women rarely make time for themselves. During her ‘second spring’ a woman should ease back on her responsibilities for others if she is able. She should focus upon herself, her own cultivation and her own needs.

•The Heart centre will have the potential for great amounts of growth during this period of a woman’s life and so it is vitally important that she find some kind of artistic outlet.
